What to do with this item... [Auto to Manual project thread]

Hey guys.

This big hunk of metal that says "S20" on it is in my trunk.
What should I do with it, given that I have an automatic transmission Honda Civic?

manual swap is getting closer and closer, just gonna use a 92-95 trans despite aluminum shift fork weakness as it was free for me, friend swapping his del sol to B. Will just need clutch and such. Details later.

RE: What to do with this item...

Sell it.

Automatic slushbox ftw! Performance? What performance? I always tell my friends...Automatics are FASTER because you don't have to waste time shifting Ohsnap

Haha, can't wait to see how the project unfolds, are you using a specific internet write-up, Chilton/Helms manual to do it or just going from experience? The reason why I ask is because this is something I'd want to do on my daily driver hatchback, but I wouldn't even know where to start.

If I see another n00b on this site with "EJ8" in their name, I'm gonna freak out. Originality FTW!

maybe not the stock auto's.... but a nicely built one will be more consistent with its shifting capabilities.

i prefer a manual b/c i like rev matching and the such..

RE: What to do with this item...

I'm going based off Honda-Tech posts, a post or two here, and sheer luck. The friend with the del sol had in fact transferred his car from auto to manual, now I'm doing the same with the exact same transmission.

Yeah, I sure will miss my torque converter eating 15 hp, my long 4 gears that likes to get out 1st as soon as possible, and accelerating in third (56........56.......56..........56.5......57 mph!) with a load in the vehicle.

Edit: PS Got the trans to Denton, TX today where I plan to do the swap (friend's house).

RE: What to do with this item...

A small update, I have a clutch reservoir on the way (eBay'd it to use off my $10 off shipping), and plan to use braided lines for the clutch. Any opinions on this setup?

Also, this thread is now officially my "Auto to Manual" miniproject thread.

RE: What to do with this item... [Auto to Manual project thread]

I now have a cheapie flywheel/clutch combo with lifetime warranty. Obtained free, once again, so no complaints of integrity.

Up next: Clutch master cylinder, and I believe I have a source on a slave cylinder.
Need a pedal assembly, and a D-series shifter.

That, and a few small items like some bolts and a starter and such, and we'll see what happens. Smile

RE: What to do with this item... [Auto to Manual project thread]

Alright, now...
I have a source on flywheel, starter, pedals, master cylinder, slave cylinder, and a shift linkage that miiiiight the right one. Also I believe I'll be obtaining the 12-point bolts that are longer on the manual.

In exchange, I'm giving this guy all the automatic parts I can, so we can recycle around like we're doing now (he's going B-series in his 'sol.)

However, I myself will have to purchase an ECU and the auto-to-manual motor mount/bracket/whatever. After all that, I should be ready to start this. Got my Craftsman high-rise jackstands ready, I could probably borrow an engine hoist off my father to make the swap easier...

This will be fun, yet will kill me.

Also will have clutch line, as this guy's going cable-transmission, that's why I'm getting the pedals and master cylinder. He offers clutch reservoir too, too bad I already bought one. Sad
I'll likely go braided stainless steel on the clutch line anyway, but eh, this will start me off.

Will still need some small parts, like cotter pin for clutch pedal and stuff, but I'll get the small details after I get the large items (this swap started with a transmission, then a clutch/pres-plate, and goes from here.)

Semi-related note, I have a fresh group 58 AutoZone battery now as opposed to some oversized, near dead DieHard Gold. Also cleaned my alternator's output stud and gave it a new m6-1.0 nut. Big Grin 14.3 volts of joy. Now just a few more things to do to electrical.

E: Woohoo, a new Transmission subforum. Jeremy, beam me over. Wink
