Site News: It's time to stop the decline
#11
Man, I didn't know it was getting that bad. I remember years ago spending all day on the shout box a very unique prt of this forum. I still have existing relationships with some of the funniest, passionate, just all around good people. I have learned so much from this site. From car advice to personal advice. It's just a great place to be. If I can help in anyway I would love to.

Look at me I was inactive for a little over a year due to me getting rid of my EJ8 and getting a truck. I came back because I traded my truck for an EBP EM1 and well I'm back at looking at some DYi's and it was nice looking through my old build thread and I'm planning on logging in daily and being active now

I've noticed the shout box is dead too, I used to love having conversations on there, it was just a quick way to be able to meet and get to know other members. I've learned so much from everyone here and hope to continue learning. Even though I'm from the west coast and most members are from the east, I feel like I personally know some of you. I think I might be one of the only few from California in this forum lol

I also like the idea of involving "noobs" into the ROTM and rookie of the year. I know when I won ROTM I was really excited and felt good. it was a nice feeling

You know I have noticed that a bit actually... there are some rules set though to how many times you can get nominated and how many times you are allowed to win ROTM. Maybe having a separate "noob of the month" or something like that would be fair?

The same people get nominated because the same people are active, it isn't favoritism. We even opened up nominations to any 6th gen platform not ej8s. Due to the lack of activity we had to bypass the one nomination every 3 month rule so that we could even have enough people to run the competition.

This is not a thread to complain about rotm, we have an old one for that lol

Social media isn't all to blame, I'm the complete opposite. Although I follow some car pages on Instagram and what not , that doesn't mean it leads me away from going on forums. It really depends on some individuals. I hardly find myself going on stancenation or any of that bs anymore. I joined forums to learn and discuss more about my car. What do people really learn by seeing other peoples cars on Instagram ? I feel that ej8squad In general is not "out there" , in other words , not a lot of people know about it. I mean , hardly anybody even knows what an ej8 is. People with 96-00 civics just assume they have an "EK". As old members leave , not enough of the newer generation acknowledges about the site.

Some of that younger generation dont know how to use a forum either. You'd be surprised how many on Instagram have asked me how to register on the site. Or where they should post. I grew up on forums, even moderated and was admin of a few before this one.

I agree not many know what an ej8 is, and some do but want to fake it and claim ek. He'll we even have some people join here and say "here's my ek" . All we can really do as a community is try to spread that knowledge, sad part is it usually turns into an ignorant argument :/

This has of course been a hot topic for many forums as of late. I posted on clubcivic last about it. The discussion here has been right in line with what I've thought as well. From every aspect; social media, family, age gaps and so on. I joined here because I had heard good things from B18C_Inside. Where did we meet? A forum. I had heard of the forum but never thought about joining. It was the specific chassis code thing. I have an EM1, I dont have any issues with any other model, but I just wasnt drawn to the code specific site. Some of you might have/do feel the same way to going over to EM1Crew. That is just part of the down side to a chassis specific forum/site. Yes, we like to have our "click" of the same chassis, but really, we are all just 6th gens who love our cars. Of course there are some bigger differences between our chassis models, but many people look for parts (brakes or engine or whatever) from the Si. Why not "be friends" because its a great way to find some of the things you might be looking for...lol. Jason told me that this was a good group of people and that there would be no bad blood, not that I expected any, for my EM1 coming on the site...so BOOM...I joined. And just like over on EM1Crew, people welcomed the different chassis code. Why? Because awesome people and we love our Civic's.

But I really do think the generation gap play a large roll in the forum decline. For us older guys/gals, we started doing this when it was, phone a friend. Then it was dial up and AOL...and it was still what forum?! Trial and error was how we learned. Now we have moved to the social media thing where its right there, right now. Or its just a Google away and there is no need to join this weird place that had the answer. Those of us that started in the earlier statement and have kind of rode the wave into the current have seen how great the forums are. We have seen the many things spoken of in here. Peoples highs in life to tragic lows. We have talked in here, text, met at events and built those relationships that just arent seemingly a priority in the younger generation. Many live by electronics. Its the way the world is turning. And while I'm not saying its a problem here, because I've not seen it, but some forums have problems with even the mods talking trash. How in the crap do you expect the new guy/gal to want to join in conversation when that is going on?! We always have to remember that the new person that is asking the same question as the last person, is where we started at some point, ground zero. We have to remember that they, as discussed, might not understand how the forum functions and they do not know how to search properly. And also, remember that if you have a sarcastic attitude, that new person doesnt know you. All they see is your response and you are a douche...lol. Either tell them you are that way so they know your tone, or let them get to know you better before you open up like that...lol. I try to "check myself" with new people since I do not know their personality type, just as they do not know mine. An inviting environment will always be better than a negative.

I've thought about, and discussed with EM1Crew the different things about ROTM as well. What about the old members who are still active but have a different car? A run with the past, site specific vehicle, and the current. A "flashback" ROTM in a sense.

I guess that is enough ramble for now...lol. Discuss.
