You may want a prime or a 70-200. All depends on what you'll be shooting.

UPDATE:

I got a D3100 (which after reading is the D40 replacememnt.)
Its a factory refurb withh 55-18 lens, strap, new battery, 0 clicks

SO on my list is extra battery, Polarizing filter, and a camera bag/case.

I looked around and some of the lenses are more expensive then the camera.

Any links on a decent lens thats a must have? and any other links to something i should look into..

thansk everyone for your help

And Leo, Yea, Ill take that disc or you can compress it, and email it using google drive.

look into a 50mm prime lens or a 28mm prime.

It all depends on what you plan on shooting. If you want to take night shots, a tripod is a must. If you want to take car shots, a CPL is a must. If you want to blur the background, a lens with a wide aperture (f/2.8 or lower) is recommended. I'd go with the 50mm f/1.4 as my first lens.

I get all my gear from B&H.

Also, don't cheap out on the CPL. Cheap glass will make your images worse, not better. Smile I'm a big fan of B+W filters.

Don't know too much about the Camera. But for Photo editing I would def use Adobe Light room.
