Prayers for my dad
#11
Slight update - dad went in yesterday morning for MRI and another CT scan. Unfortunately, they couldn't get the scans downloaded before he saw the Oncologist. However, based on the CT scan from Friday the MD says that my dad will definitely have one kidney removed. They will try to remove the two 3cm tumors from the other kidney and hopefully will be able to salvage enough of that kidney for it to function and regenerate. He goes back to the MD tomorrow so they can talk about yesterdays scans and determine a plan of attack. Sounds like they want to do the surgery on the kidneys next week. According to my dad, the liver was fine and they will take a look at his lung after the procedure on his kidneys is complete.

I talked to him a little bit yesterday and he seemed in good spirits. He said he will beat this thing and be back to normal in no time. I just hope and pray that he is right. I'll let you guys know what I find out tomorrow.

Another update - Dad had a scan done of his bones and brain on Monday, results came back today. The cancer has NOT spread to his bones or brain which is great news!!! The Dr he talked to for a second opinion was more dad's style - blunt but optimistic. He said that the one kidney would need removed but was confident he could save the other one. Sounds like there is very something in the lung(s) as well but I think they're waiting to deal w/ that after the kidneys are taken care of. Dad goes back in on Friday to talk to a team of specialists who will formulate a plan of attack. Hopefully this means dad will be cleared for surgery next week so we can get to work on beating this thing! I'm feeling cautiously optimistic but still don't want to get my hopes up too high or get too depressed. Thanks everyone for your prayers and kind thoughts, they are certainly appreciated Smile

It's awful seeing someone you love go through this. I've had multiple family members battle cancer and it sucks. Glad to hear they have a good shot at getting out the bad stuff. Definitely praying for you, your family and him as well.

Thanks guys, I too have had multiple family members battle cancer including my mom and 3 of my 4 grandparents. It's never easy, but my family is full of survivors and I just keep hoping my dad will be another one of those survivors.

Leo, thanks for being a good friend. I'm glad you reached out to me and feel free to continue doing so. I will certainly keep you (and everyone) up to date on what I find.

Another update: Dad is going in for surgery on Thursday to remove the tumors from the kidney they think they can save. They're also going to take a look at his bladder while they're in there. Sounds like he'll be in the hospital about 3 days. Assuming all goes well w/ that procedure they will go back in 4-6 weeks to remove the other kidney. Once that is complete they will examine the lungs/liver as well. Glad to have a plan finally, still not sure if there will be need for chemo or what exactly the course of therapy will be. I'm going to visit my parents this evening to talk to them about what's going on.
