Top level national builds - paid for, but not built by the owners
#11
It frustrates me personally because of how hard I've worked recently on the same mods in relation to some things the owner said. If it was a regular car person who just didn't have the time, that's one thing. This owner self-admitted doesn't understand what was paid for.

^ aaaand, thats where the argument stands. Someone who knows about cars and paid for work is acceptable, some chick that didnt know what was being paid for and just wanted to fit in is not.. (and frankly is foolish)

still a beauty of a car tho Big Grin

I think both you and her can be proud of your cars. I do think it's kinda lame that she let other people tell her what to do; but then again, aren't we all kind of letting other people what to do w/ our cars by following the car forums/magazines/blogs, etc. and following (or bucking) the current trends? You poured blood, sweat and tears into your Scooby (as well as money) and have made immense progress so far. Is it a stunning show stopper? No. Is it a DD that you can take to the show and track and have fun at all of them? Yes. She paid big bucks to have her car built by someone, it is amazing to look at and the build quality is obvious...but how much enjoyment can she really have w/ that car when it's trailered to shows and (probably) rarely actually driven? My guess, enough enjoyment to make it worth it to her...even if it's not remotely worth it to most of us.

Personally, I "understand" a lot of things about cars and there's some work that I can actually do myself. Unfortunately, there's a TON of work that I could not do for myself and, if I had the money, I would research and find a trustworthy local shop to do it for me. Difference between me and her is that I already have all the ideas in my head and would build a car I can actually drive.

But I don't really get "hating" on her for it. She still has one bad ass WRX that most of us would kill to own...

Huh? So you don't respect a Lamborghini owner because they bought their high performance exotic VS. building a *insert car here*?

Anyone else laugh at this?

Sorry to bump this thread 3 months after it was made, but i actually read this article in I.T. Someone that claims to be a custom import car enthusiast but doesn't read the mags, webpages, manuals etc. and has zero idea how to and doesn't do any of the work themselves is A LOT less respectable. If someone is enthusiastic about a certain car they are going to know that thing inside and out. It's a labor of love, if you truly love your car you are going to want to do as many things to it yourself until you either don't have free time, need help, or need someone else to do it. Having help with something or paying someone to do a few things to your car, yeah I can still respect that, but when you have someone do EVERYTHING to your car thats just not respectable. Built not bought, it's not a coincidence that a lot of people say that, they say it because they are true car enthusiasts who love their cars enough to want to do their own customizations. I guess the only way someone can understand what i'm saying is to have done work on their car themselves and know how good it feels to have accomplished it themselves. I know that car costed over a hundred grand, you think a 21yr old hair stylist or whatever she is makes that kind of money? no, mommy and daddy paid for everything, all she did was tell the techs " I want a 600hp STI with as many top of the line parts as you can put in it, leave nothing stock, oh and it's going to be a show car so make it look as nice as possible, money is not an issue, my parents are buying it for me as a reward because i ate all my vegetables last night".. you can't be an import enthusiast and not know what a shaved n tucked bay is, a few years ago yeah i could see if the term was unfamiliar but they're everywhere now, she's just a rich poser using her money to impress people.

My ex gf was 22 making 94k and she's a hairstylist it really is more common then you think. Her best friend was easily pulling over 6 figures she bought a brand new house cash (and no it wasn't a shack)

Well, My position is kinda the same. I see the hellaflush and SOS crowd, they founnd a set of coilovers and bought some wheels and they have an attitude like their rides are superior. The last SOS meet I went to had other cars with alot more work done to them and they get sent off to another area.

Half these people doesnt even know their engine code, or anything else about the tech specs other then what comes on the factor window sticker. After looking at their rides, theyre all stock with coilovers and wheels. every now and then youll see a boosted ride.

Alot of the rich kids instead of buying a Mustang GT for 40k will buy a 20k car and throw the other 20k at accessories and upgrades at it. 2 months later theyre now a hard parker and never even touched a rachet before.

Posers will pose cause its whats "cool". I have to agree to some extent with the notion that if you do not know jack about your own car its a lot less respectable but after working in the automotive parts business for the last year i do not find it at all surprising. I have litterally met people who do not know a single thing abou their own car. "I have no idea what that is, i just drive it." has been said to me so often i just can not respond with a serious answer to half these people. Oh and its not just women who say this either. I have met more than a few men who are the same way.

either way there are always two ways building cars goes. you either have money or you dont. if you have money you can build it yourself if you have the time or pay someone else to do it for you. if you dont have money you can save money to get the parts to build the car yourself or just jerry rig the car to get the "look" you cant afford. She paid for the car and paid for the upgrades and took it to professionals who did an insane job on the car. if she tried to do the work herself it would have been lack luster. I really do not care how the car came to be and who paid for it as long as the car is done right. if she picked out how the car looked then she is partially responsible for its overall look.

If i had the money i would pay people to fix up my car like that. I dont care who does the work so long as they are done to the vision I created and thats what makes the car MINE. Now if she said to the guys heres a lot of money make me something cool then i would be more inclined to frown upon her but i can not as she was a part of the build process even if her inexperiance proceeded her greatly.
