"Stolen" Civic Si
#11
I'd love to show up, with all my receipts and say your getting sued pretty hard. But doesn't help that the owner was riding around with different tags. The whole car is probably is stolen. Dumbass' should have checked to see if that was the issue first.

So they expect for a 15+ year old car to have every receipt for every part ever bought for it to make sure its not stolen? Doubtful...

pretty much. yes. the car is 15 years old but not all the parts on it are 15 years old. if you have a brand new pair of bride seats and sparco harnesses, you better have the receipts with you. same for anything under the hood. yes they do expect you to have receipts or they could consider those parts stolen.
just like if you're carrying around a butt load of cash, you better have a bank statement saying that you got the money out of the bank or it could get taken by the police under suspicion of selling drugs. true story. happened to my step father.

here is the thing though, you are innocent until proven guilty and posession is 9/10ths of the law. If you are in possesion of a part that does not have any indicator that it belongs to the vehicle AND it is not reported stolen or comes up as stolen, they can NOT prove that your are NOT the owner of the parts. They can not prove the parts are stolen either. They just "believe" it is a stolen part.

You have to give the cops a reason for them to do this though. riding on different plates is a reason for them to do this as you are breaking the law intentionally. Any type of indicator that the car is stolen will cause the cops to do this if you indeed claim the car as your own.

as for your step father... unless the cop is dirty chances are he gave them a reason to mess with him and that is how the cop choose to mess with him back.

^^

I got yanked in Georgia in my cadillac a few years back.. Cops kept asking if i had large amounts of cash, searched the car for an hour.

If they find alot of cash, they will seize it and youll have to go thru the courts to get it back. After spending $$ for lawyers and court cost, its just another way for the state to make extra cash.

I mean its not illegal to have large amounts of cash, but they will try to lock up your cash for a while and give it back after they get their cut.

Whole thing is corrupt

^^yeap. Basically. My stepdad didn't haw insurance and he got pulled over for a stop sign infraction. Cops around here are pretty messed up and my stepdad is African American. They searched the car and found his money, he doesn't like banks, me and mom came to get the car because they wouldn't let him drive it home, one of the 3 cops there had his hand on the gun the whole time even tho my stepdad didnt do anything. they gave him a ticket.
It's happened to me once before in my old Saturn. I was 16 and I got pulled over for speeding and the cop had his gun drawn at me for suspicion of a stolen vehicle. Even tho it was my car. Basically a cop can do what they want and get away with it by saying they had "suspicion"

So what if you buy used parts? Are you SOL?

And the police seizing large amounts of cash I understand. I mean, if you are carrying around $10k, you are probably up to no good.
