Subie vtec?

My friend just picked up an 06 impreza and we were looking at the user's manual and came across their i-Active Valve Lift System (AVLS).

They described it as the cam lobe profile gets larger as the RPM of the engine rises... which makes it sound like it's a continuous, gradual vtec (which would be cool)

but i did some research and found that it's similar to vtec but w/ a mid RPM stage lift and high RPM lift.

I was a little bummed. I thought they had made something really cool lol.

anyone have any experience w/ this AVLS thing tho?

RE: Subie vtec?

All WRX's have VTEC. It's called TD04.

ba-dum psssshhh

But seriously, pretty much every manufacturer has some sort of variable cam profile system by now. Honda's VTEC is more well known because it was one of the first to be commonly available, and because it usually has an aggressive (and thus, more noticeable) changeover.

RE: Subie vtec?

Toytoa has VVT-i = Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence which continuously changes the intake valve lift duration. There's now even DUAL VVT-i Which controls both the intake and exhaust valves seperately for either more efficiency or more power (avialable on the Scion XD and new 09 Corolla so far)

RE: Subie vtec?

i doubt it is anything like vtec. the way it says its function is more like that of toyota's vvt-i or any of the other variable timing designs. as far as i know honda is the only one to actually switch from a low cam to a high cam lobe. and of course the new i-vtec's include the variable valve timing as well, through a hydrolic cam gear.

RE: Subie vtec?

i looked into AVLS a little more and it has two stages just like vtec if i read it correctly.

idk how it engages but its more like vtec than the toyota iVVT or i-vtec
