GSR gauge cluster in 96-98 civic

I get questions every now and then about how I put a teg cluster in my 96 civic so rather than clicking on my sig, I figured I'd post it on here( I know many of you used my diy on ht in my sig ) lets make this a sticky!

I finally got ahold of a US spec 97 GSR gauge cluster for a damn good price (thanks to sa21199  Thumbup ) to replace my POS civic one which I kinda messed up (oh well  Toungue ). But anyway here is what is needed for the install:

3/4 x 12 inch plumbing strap

2- nuts and bolts (I used 7/16 cuz they were like 3 cents a piece at the hardware store, you can use pretty much whatever fits)

scratch all or center punch

phillips screw driver

Drill and some drill bits (to bore the holes on the plumbing strap)

and alot of time ( you'll need it read to find out why).

As far as wiring goes, I tried to use the pinouts that FifthGearOnline had on his link, but only some of the lights on the cluster worked. So I visited Merritr's website and every thing worked except for one pinout.

This is the part of the original pinout from merritr.com the only wire that didn't work on my application was the yellow and black wire for the fuel gauge

2 ----- ----- ----- ----- -----
3 ----- ----- ----- ----- -----

for my 96 ex it was actually here on B3:

2 ----- ----- ----- ----- -----
3 yel/blk B10 fuel gauge ----- -----

Everything else as far as wiring was concerned was good to go for my application on merritr's site with exception of the wire I pointed out above.

Here are the pics of the install:

my tired POS civic gauge cluster (butchered thanks to me  Toungue )

my new gsr cluster.....yay!!!

here is the plumbing strap and the nuts and bolts used:

grab the bracket and cut it so that it looks just as pictured:

grab one nut (not the baby producing one) and bolt and fasten the bracket to the bottom of the GSR cluster. The hole on the corner of the cluster should be big enough for the bolt to fit through so you don't have to modify anything on the cluster:

once you got both sides bracketed, place the cluster inside the dash and re-use the screws that held the civic gauge cluster in:

it should look something like this:

after you make sure it fits properly go ahead and plug the harnesses in and you'll be good to go. Again, applications may be different from year to year i.e: different year clusters etc. So  take your time!!! . You might have to pull out and re-pin the cluster harness more than once, but don't get frustrated. Once you are done you will be very happy with the results.

Thanks to both FifthGearOnline for answering my questions, and merritr.com for providing great info  Thumbup  Thumbup

I rolled my odometer forward to match the existing milage on my motor. It's a bit tricky...but I got it to work.

Nice job on that write up man. 2 Thumbup:thumbup:

I have one question tho, is there a cap at all around the cluster? I was told that there is but I am not sure. Also, I would like to switch my miles backwords when I do my motor swap. I looked at the H-T link but all of the images couldn't be found. Anyone got any other ideas or link to help me out?

Ty

do all the hook ups just plug in, or do you have to rewire some stuff?
