RE: greddy turbo

Need to be a little more specific. All turbo kits are good for hp. What you want out of a kit is more important. There's A LOT more that's important than just what brand is the best.

RE: greddy turbo

Sounds to me like you've got a lot of reading to do buddy.

Homemadeturbo.com and TurboD16.com are your friends, go to those sites, sign up and read around...and I mean...READ around.

I wouldn't recommend asking any questions especially on Homemadeturbo, as it has most likely been asked and answered numerous times.

Read around the n00b forums, read the stickies because you can get a real basic understanding just from those. Actually I'll even do you one better and get you the link to a real good thread:

http://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/index...ic=28135.0

Read the entire thing to start off, then keep reading more on the site, you'll learn a lot within no time.

................

Now to answer your question, yes Greddy kits are good for increasing your horsepower. The advantages of buying a Greddy kit are (as you will read in the threads) that it's all one complete setup, you don't have to worry about the headaches or issues that come up with piecing together your own kit, you get quality parts that you can just install and go without even getting your car tuned.

The cons are, the high price, and that the kit is pretty much "standard" as in it does not maximize the potential of your motor or vehicle. You're buying a base kit and if you want more power in the future, you will have to upgrade particular components (such as the turbo).

In the end you're buying convenience at the cost of a high price.

A lot of people like to do what are called "junkyard" setups, which means taking some time and sourcing out parts from local junkyards, forum classifieds, and ebay for example. If you take the time and do the research, you can make a kit with as much or better quality as the GReddy kit, that will be MUCH faster, and will cost you roughly half as much (most setups seem to hover around $1500-2000.) Not to mention you can say that you did the setup yourself (you may hear the saying "True turbo kits are built, not bought") so if something goes wrong you'll be able to find the problem and diagnose it yourself.

It's not an easy task, but the knowledge and satisfaction you get from doing it yourself may outweigh the time and effort in the end...IF that is your thing.

Some people just don't want to have to worry about it, "I'll throw money at you and you give me this kit and I put it on my car and I go faster, the end." That's fine too, it depends what you want to do in the end.

RE: greddy turbo

^^^^ Very well put bigthumbup

I pieced my kit together and I think it came out to around 1500 with the tune. I was really happy with it but if you are all about immediate gratification, that might not be your best bet. Waiting for the good deals on quality items takes some time. I think i was collecting parts for about 6 months or so.

I can't say how important researching is. Check out the sites Artikgrau325is mentioned. bigthumbup

Thanks! I'm happy that someone who actually has completed their project chimed in (as it verified that I covered all of the bases) bigthumbup.

I was about to say, "DAMN 6 months!" until I realized that I've probably been piecing my own kit together for about the same amount or longer haha. It's crazy when I think about it because the whole thing should cost $1500, and in 6 months that's not a WHOLE lot of money, why the hell am I not boosted yet????

I'm getting there though Wink. I HOPE to be setup by summer though...jeez.

Oh...and another note to the OP (or anyone for the matter), the book "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell is a must read for those that are trying to understand the fundamentals of forced induction vehicles, some of it gets a bit intense for the average reader (such as formulas for thermodynamics) but you learn not only what goes into making a kit, but what each part's function is and why some designs are more efficient than others.

Oh definitely, it's a MUST READ! It gets really interesting too, hard to put down. You wait until you read the "Future of Turbo-Charging" section, I think they show some of the new model superchargers from Jackson Racing that are supposed to have ZERO lag, with all of the benefits of a turbo...they even look like turbos. This is from the site http://www.jacksonracing.com/production.htm

"The new Rotrex supercharger combines the throttle response of the Roots supercharger with the compressor efficiency of a turbo, but without the lag. And the Rotrex does this without noise, without oil lines connected to the engine, and without the heat common in turbo applications. With boost capabilities of over 20psi we can address any special needs you might have in a custom application."

Take a look at that supercharger and tell me with a straight face that that thing is not badass!

Why hasn't the OP posted some sort of response to any of his threads??? I hope he's not one of those guys that goes around asking random questions to build up hit post count and then forgets about them...I actually put a lot of effort into answering his question haha.
