RE: engine

Hahaha......

Yes the D16y5 is a good engine, Honda's design engineers are very good at what they do.

For future reference, searching could easily have answered your question, but I'll post up what I found to help you out...again. Also please try to make a coherent thread title next time...you seem to like these one word failures and they don't really do much to give the reader an idea of what your issue may be...and it also messes up thread archiving later down the road...think of it like people that use keywords to get views on their Craigslist ads.

A (few) advantages of the D16y5 motor in the interest of performance:

1) D16y5 has factory roller rockers
2) D16y5 uses the same head as a D16y8, only it's rockers and cam are different
3) the D16y5 has wideband o2 sensors
4) The 3.722 HX final drive ratio is desired for boosted applications
5) D16y5 has a taller vtec lobe than the D16y8 (But I don't know if the D16y5 rocker arm ratio takes advantage of this or not)

A few disadvantages (may or may not be true...):

1) The HX ecu is very, very picky. The slightest mod could easily throw a CEL (Check Engine Light). The popular thing to do with D16y5 owners is to convert to OBDI and run a P28 ecu tuned to their needs.
2)The D16y5 head has vtec-e which means only one intake valve per cylinder opens during non vtec operations. Since vtec-e doesn't activate until 5600 rpm (stock) even with a T3/T4 (.63 turbine) you will hit full boost before vtec activates. That means boost will be pushing against those closed valves before vtec-e activates, and imo, those valves can open since the y5 valve springs are so weak.

^^^Those are the sources. There's an entire squad dedicated to people with the motor. I honestly had a bunch of negative things to say about the D16y5 before I searched. But I did it because I believe that not knowing something is being blinded, but refusing to know something is the same as being ignorant. I'm happy I searched....But I don't want to put anymore effort into it than I already have.

To my fellow EJ8-Squadders, if any of my posted info here is incorrect feel free to show the young padawong the way.

On a side note...I was just wondering...Did you ever pick out some rims for your car yet JDM Civic?
