DIY Battery in Trunk

This is my first DIY write up sooo be easy on me..lol..if i miss anything or something ur not to sure of..let me know..and ill be able to answer ur questionbigthumbup

Ok...soo i decided to do this today..Ive never done this before, but i do have experience in electrical soo i wouldnt recomend doing this if you know nothing about wiring...I mean it doesnt take a rocket scientist to do, but then again my 10 year old brother probably couldnt do it soo...ya kinda get the point..lol...

[b]Caution!!!: if you do not hook everything up right, and put the little protective boot things at the end of each connection ring, and if the ring touches metal and grounds itself, you will fry the starter!!!..or worst!!cries

Soo..Here we goWoot

Things you will need:
Socket set
Screw drivers
14 feet of 2 gauge wire(industrial)
14 feet of 4 gauge wire from audio store(i used Tsunami wiringWoot)
Battery Terminal ( i used gold plated from o'rielly's)
And the Connectors to crimp on the end( or smash with hammer..lol) of the wire.

I bought the Tsunami wire from an Audio store and got all the ring connectors from Orielly's..they will have mostly everyhting you need to do this custom set-up..or you can buy a Battery in trunk relocation kit off ebay or something..but i like to pick out all my stuff myself soo i know what im getting and i know its the best..

Now when you go to Lowes (which is where i went) Dont tell them what you are using the 2 guage wire for..lol..they will tell you its the wrong kind and will try to tell you to go somewhere else...They dont sell 2 gauge wire in the audio type, its only 4 gauge and then goes to 1 o/t..The 2 gauge is industrial and has a bunch of 8 guage wires inside...You wanna use this because it will carry the current better to the starter...just thought i would inform you on this little issue..

ok this is the stuff i bought

Blue=Tsunami audio wire....Black Industrial 2 Gauge

RE: DIY Battery in Trunk

First you wanna take the wire you will be using to run from you fuse box to the battery and crimp a connector on the end and slide the boot on there..make sure you do this soo none of the metal will touch anything...you might need to use a dremmel to cut away alittle inside the fuse box to make it fit depending on what type of connector your crimping on your wire..

it should look like this..

After the battery and everything is taken out..you will see a big rubber grommet around a bunch of wire...this is your engine harness going through the fire wall...what i did was cut a little hole and just ran the wire through that into the cab..its the easiest way and is closest to the fuse box

Going into the firewall

Coming out into the cab...this can be located by following your wires from your ecu into the firewall

the next part is just tucking the wire away where no one can see it..lol..i have ocd wen it comes to this type of stuff..i want everything to look clean and professional

The easiest way is to tuck it under the plastic panel running along the side and then under the back seat and out into the trunk (i removed all the carpet and everyhtig in the trunk a while ago soo that made it a lot easier)

RE: DIY Battery in Trunk

Ok now the semi hard part...The 2 gauge wire you bought, you will notice this stufff is very STIFF...You WILL get mad at it at some point in doing this..lol...its impossible not to...Its really hard to bend around corners especially wen your tucking it away and out of sight..so remember to take a deep breath and everyhting will be okay..lolWoot

Heres the 14ft of 2 gauge

What you wanna do is take one of the connectors and crimp it on the end of the wire..this stuff is a lot thicker and harder to crimp down on soo i smashed it with a hammer..lol..whatever floats ur boat..

Also the cable you remove from the starter has a boot covering the whole connector ring..cut it off the old cable and slide it on the new one to make sure no water can get to the connector...

should look something like this

Now that you have done that, you will wanna hook this to the starter where the old cable was....the nut for me was pretty hard to get off since the mounts were in the way but it will come off, just take your time..lol..and it will look like this...

Now take that wire and bend it the best you can and run it right into the same hole as the other wire is going through...

Do the same as before and tuck the black wire nice and neatly away behind that plastic panel..both tucked away should look like this...

RE: DIY Battery in Trunk

Here, both wires are tucked and are ran under the back seat and out into the trunk with the battery

Next, you will need your ground... which i ended up buying a new one from o'rielly's cause i wanted a longer one...but is not necessary..And your battery terminal connector..Again i bought the 24k gold plated one cause i wanted to use the best...ocd..lol

Take Both of the wires and put them together and tighten them down together inside the terminal...I cut off the red boot thing from the old power wire to throw on here..i would suggest doing the same..

Then you will need to find a spot and sand down the paint to bare metal and find a place to put your ground..i drilled a hole for a screw to go into.

After hooking everyhting up it will look like this..depending on where you want your battery to sit...I will be buying a regular black box tomorrow for my batter to sit in...the cardboard one is for show of how it will sit

RE: DIY Battery in Trunk

Pretty damn straight to the point man....and great project pics. Clearly saw everything I needed to see. Even though I know how to do this easy, I think this is worded so even the most novice person could probably do this.

The only feedback I have for you.... (but not necessary at all) is tell people the other details that are involved in the project like disconnecting the battery, removing the battery tray, how to remove some of the interior panels and carpeting, some of the tricks of the trade (tips), precautionary measures, etc. This is by no means necessary but would be realy nice in a complete DIY. What you did was short, to the point & very sweet. Gotta love it man!!! Mad Props!!!
