deciding between springs or coil
im deciding which ones to get and i need inputs. I was wondering how would coil over last over cold harsh winter? i was told that coils could rust/corroded if left on during winter, and it is also pricey.
Lowering spring on the otherhand is cheaper but i dont know the durability of the spring for winter. one question i have about the spring is that after i install the spring do i have to get aftermarket shocks or should i just go to a car parts store and just buy regular shocks from them?

RE: deciding between springs or coil
Are you referring to coilover kits? Such as the whole dampening kit, or just the sleeves with stock shocks?
If you have stock shocks and want to put lowering springs on, this will be the cheapest way of going- but you will sacrifice the life of your stock shocks. (having more pressure on them will blow them quicker as they aren't mean to be used with performance lowering springs). It will work, but it won't last.
I'd personally say go with a nice coil over kit, you'll be able to adjust them first of all which is nice if needed and they will come with everything you need. Brand new shock/strut/springs all in one.
If you want to go with lowering springs on stock shocks you can, but you will most likely have to get performance shocks anyways down the road cause they will go eventually (So, you minez well just get it all at the same time with the coilover kits).
My first car had Ebay sleeves on KYB -G2's s/s and that shit was ruff. Stay away from sleeves if you can, it's pure crap. Tein basics are good, I rolled on those for along time. Most will have boots on the shock to protect them from weather as well.
One thing I learned throughout the years is never go cheap with suspension. Not only can it be dangerous, but it can cost you a lot more later on if something happens. Trust me.

RE: deciding between springs or coil
u can ride on stock shocks but like stated above theyre gonna blow rather quickly.(not like the next day but u never know) As for the g/c coilovers im not 100% but I think they make koni edition ones. I had crapy ebay springs and they were horrible they came wirth the car when i bought it. Some poor guy traded me for his stock suspension took them off my car and gave me $75 bucks. I just wanted to trade straight up too. If ur not gonna track/auto-x/show ur car just go with the springs. only a couple hundred less

I have to agree with EVERYTHING BlackandMild said here, I bought Tein S-Tech's with KYB GR-2 struts for my first setup, and I liked them for a while. The ride quality is very comfortable but I wish I had just bought a Koni/GC setup to start off with. I wish I had the ability to make custom changes to my setup (such as lowering my car more than 2 inches) and so that $400 I spent a year ago could have been applied to a setup I really wanted.
I won't say I necessarily did the wrong thing (although I later found that KYB GR-2 struts are basically stock equivalents), but I just didn't expect that I would want a more aggressive setup later down the road.

RE: deciding between springs or coil
SideFX, by "Ground Control" I assume it would be just the coil over sleeves mentioned above, but people put "Ground Control" on a lot of shit (whole damper kits, just coilovers, springs)- could mean anything without price.
The sleeves would be good on stiff performance shocks like Koni, etc. If you want them on stock shocks, I wouldn't recommend it. Lowering springs would be better then that actually if you decide to.
Ground controls would be good with Koni's cause they are adjustable shocks. It's better having a stiff setup using those. It also depends on which "Ground Control" you're referring to
Same Artik, It's all trial and error- that's life you learn from it. Man, I even paid those fukers like $500 to install that shit because I didn't know how, If I only knew how easy it was then...

RE: deciding between springs or coil
Get the Coilovers with a decent set of struts. I've been using Tokico blues and H&R Springs for years. I too will be upgrading to a complete adjustable coilover system like the Skunk2s after I get the engine where I want it. Don't go cheap. If you upgrade the springs upgrade the shocks and struts too. Nothing sux worse then being in a bumpy ass ride.

i got way tired with my ride height (stock... like 50 bajillion feet off the ground ) and i actually came up on a deal on craigslist, i got some oem struts with tein s tech lowering springs installed... normally i wouldn't do the oem shock/lowering spring pair but the shocks had about half the mileage of the ones i was using and they were going out anyways, but i'm saving up for coilovers asap.
pretty much what everyone else has said you'll shorten your strut life by just putting springs on them.. the piston doesn't have as much travel, makes sense right?
i noticed after i put them on too that the ride's kinda spongy over bumps so i mean the lowering springs are good if you intend on swapping out the shocks shortly after (and you've got a wild hair up your ass like me) but if you're looking for something more permanent, go with the coilovers.
