Best Intake for D16Y8??

Hi there,

I wanted some opinions on inductions kits, I wanna know:

1. Which is the best in terms of power gain for my stock d16y8?
2. And also, which is the best in terms of sound in your opinion?

A friend of mine has recommended AEM intakes, my cousins says get a cheap K & N induction kit? And on this site it seems like everyone goes with the Whale penis?! LOL I think that is the password jdm carbon intake?

None of them will make significant gains on an otherwise stock D16Y8. Your basic criteria will be price, looks, and sound. The best bang for the buck would probably be replacing your stock paper filter with a K&N drop in filter. You can remove the resonator piping (the "milk jug" in the bumper) to get the sound of a short ram.

And1 EXACTLY!!!

W/O proper supporting modifications that amplify the effects the intake, you won't really feel a difference with any of them.

The best bang for the buck is BY FAR simply dropping a K&N filter into your stock box and removing the lower resonator. IMO If you want cool looks get the Password JDM. If you want power, get the AEM ITR CAI or a Generic 3" intake tube a slap a velocity stack & filter on it.

Even with a lot of supporting mods on top of an intake (excluding a cam, valvetrain, cam gear, and a tune), a single cam will barely make any noticeable gains.

All an intake on an SOHC is, is noise. As stated, the best bang for your buck would be to get a drop-in high flow filter in the stock intake and remove the lower resonator (have to remove your front bumper to do it). Even so, it doesn't have the "throaty" sound that a short ram offers. The only problem I have with K&N is that you have to oil their filters every time you clean them to get the best filtration out of them. I'm too lazy to do that.

If you want the cool throaty sound, buy a generic intake off eBay and put on a nice filter. I prefer the AEM Dry Flow (Roughly $50-$60 shipped off SummitRacing.com) since that's what I run. A plus is that unlike the K&N, you never have to oil it, just clean it occasionally.

I personally have a 2-piece generic intake off eBay with an AEM Dry Flow filter. In total it cost me $85 shipped or so and I can have it be both a short ram and cold air by just slapping on the 2nd half of piping.

RE: Best Intake for D16Y8??

Hi guys,

I have read everyone's thoughts and have come to a conclusion!

I think I should be choosing between an AEM CAI or the Password JDM one? So should i choose the one made for my car or the ITR one? Does anyone know the part number?

and please bear in mind, I am from the UK so part prices suck for me!

I kinda figured beforehand that I won't be getting much power if any!

A friend of mine bought my old car off me a year and a half back which was a MB6 Civic with a B18C4, which I loved! And he has an AEM V2 intake on it, and it sounds absolutely awesome!

How do you know which AEM is best then?

Thanks guys and sorry for all the questions! I am a rookie!

RE: Best Intake for D16Y8??

I had an original AEM intake for about 7 years it was my first mod ever. The only bad things about it were that you had to take off the whole bumper to remove and clean the filter. Second thing was more me being paranoid but I always avoided huge water puddles in fear that I would hydro-lock my engine. Now I have the Password JDM that I got used from Brad (bjscivic) and I couldn't be happier with it. It's nice not to worry about hydro-lock and it sounds great. Performance between the two are pretty similar.

So does that mean that the Long AEM is the best one to get? I like the password JDM because its different, plus i'll have to import it, its gonna cost me $275 shipped to the uk? Which I think aint bad?! I want it to look good as well! Is it loud throughout the rev range?

Nope, that means I like the Password JDM: better than my old AEM CAI. The Password JDM sounds a lot different than the AEM.

Here's a video clip w/the whale penis on.

RE: Best Intake for D16Y8??

With a cold air intake, once the intake is installed, you don't have to take off the front bumper to get to the filter. All you have to do is pull back the fender lining in the passenger wheel well and you can reach it from there.

Like I said before, an intake is just noise an a Honda. Short ram's sound more throaty and supposedly give you better throttle response / torque but cold air's are louder and give you more top end power. Supposedly of course...
